How to Clean and Care for Your Watch UK Sapphire Crystal & 316L Steel Guide
A sapphire crystal watch that's five years old should look the same as a sapphire crystal watch that's five days old.
That's not wishful thinking. It's material science. Sapphire crystal rates 9 on the Mohs hardness scale — diamond is 10. Nothing you encounter in daily life scratches it under ordinary contact. The right care extends this. The wrong care does nothing except waste time.
How often to clean your watch
A quick wipe every few days. A more thorough clean once a month. That's enough for any daily-wear watch to stay in the condition it arrived in.
Daily cleaning — 30 seconds
A soft microfibre cloth. Dry. Wipe the case, dial glass, and bracelet. The microfibre picks up fingerprints, skin oils, and dust without scratching anything.
Monthly cleaning — 5 minutes
Step 1. Fill a small bowl with lukewarm water and one drop of mild soap.
Step 2. Dip a soft-bristled toothbrush into the water. Gently scrub the bracelet links, the case edges, and the caseback.
Step 3. Rinse with clean lukewarm water. For 5 ATM or higher watches, you can run briefly under a tap.
Step 4. Dry immediately with a microfibre cloth.
Step 5. Leave to air dry for 10 minutes before putting back on the wrist.
Caring for the frosted finish
Use only a soft dry cloth on the frosted case surface. Avoid any polishing compounds — these are designed for polished surfaces and will flatten the frosted texture permanently.
Water resistance — what your rating actually means
3 ATM: Splash resistant. No swimming.
5 ATM: Suitable for shallow swimming.
10 ATM: Swimming, snorkelling, shower wear, sea exposure — all covered. The Rainbow Edition series is rated 10 ATM.
What to avoid
Ultrasonic cleaners, chemical cleaners, compressed air, and abrasive cloths. Mild soap and a soft cloth is all you need.
