How to Clean a Frosted Watch: The Right Way and the Ways That Damage It
Cleaning a frosted watch is different from cleaning a polished or brushed steel watch and getting it wrong can permanently damage the finish. The frosted texture is created by a specific micro-surface treatment. The wrong cleaning method fills in that texture, flattens it, and turns your frosted watch into something that looks polished. That’s irreversible.
This guide covers exactly what to use, what to avoid, and how to keep the frosted finish looking exactly as it did the day it arrived.
What You Must Never Use on a Frosted Watch
Polishing cloths. This is the most common mistake. A polishing cloth including jewellery polishing cloths and silver polishing cloths works by micro-abrading the surface and filling scratches with a mild compound. On a frosted watch this fills in the micro-texture of the frosted finish, effectively polishing it smooth. The watch will look shinier where you used the cloth. This cannot be undone.
Abrasive materials. Paper towels, rough cloths, kitchen roll, sponge scourers anything with surface texture coarser than a soft microfibre will scratch the frosted finish under magnification, degrading the surface quality over time.
Harsh chemicals. Bleach, acetone, solvent-based cleaners, alcohol wipes with high alcohol concentration these can react with the steel finish or damage seals around the crown. Avoid all of these.
Ultrasonic cleaners. Ultrasonic cleaning creates high-frequency vibrations that can affect the micro-texture of a frosted finish and potentially compromise water resistance seals. Not suitable for frosted watches.
Hand cream and sunscreen directly on the case. These build up in the micro-texture of the frosted surface over time, collecting dust and creating a dull film. Apply hand cream before putting the watch on, not after.
What to Use: The Right Method
The right approach is simple, gentle, and takes about two minutes.
For everyday cleaning after daily wear:
- Use a clean, dry, soft microfibre cloth.
- Wipe the case, lugs, and bracelet in gentle, straight strokes following the direction of the bracelet links.
- Do not rub in circular motions straight strokes are less likely to accumulate micro-scratches over time.
- For the dial face, wipe very gently with the lightest pressure the sapphire crystal is resistant to scratching but the bezel and case edge are not.
For deeper cleaning if the watch has visible grime or has been worn in water:
- Fill a small bowl with lukewarm (not hot) water. Add one small drop of mild dish soap and stir gently.
- Dip a very soft brush a new, clean baby toothbrush is ideal into the soapy water.
- Brush the frosted case surface gently in short, consistent strokes. Work around the lugs and between bracelet links where grime collects.
- Rinse with clean lukewarm water. All Tomell frosted watches are rated 10 ATM, so a gentle rinse under a running tap is fine.
- Pat dry immediately with a clean dry microfibre cloth. Do not leave to air dry as water spots can form, particularly on the dial face.
- Leave flat with the dial facing up for 10–15 minutes before wearing to ensure any moisture around the crown has evaporated.
The Bracelet
The bracelet links on Tomell frosted watches collect the most grime skin oils, hand cream, and small particles accumulate in the joins between links. This is entirely normal and doesn’t affect the watch, but it dulls the bracelet appearance over time.
For bracelet cleaning, the same soapy water and soft brush method applies. Work the brush between each link pair in a pushing motion to dislodge grime. Rinse and dry thoroughly. If the bracelet has an adjustable clasp, open it during drying to allow any moisture inside the clasp mechanism to evaporate.
If the Frosted Finish Looks Dull
If the frosted finish appears duller than when the watch arrived, the most common causes are:
Build-up of skin oils and hand cream. A gentle clean using the soapy water method above will typically restore the appearance. Give the case a thorough but gentle brush, rinse, and dry the frosted texture should reappear clearly once the surface residue is removed.
Accidental use of a polishing cloth. If a polishing cloth has been used, the micro-texture in the affected areas has been partially filled. This cannot be reversed at home. The watch would need professional refinishing to restore the original frosted surface.
Minor surface contact over time. Light contact with hard surfaces accumulates micro-marks in the frosted texture. This is normal with any watch finish and part of the watch’s story over time.
