Watch Size Guide UK How to Choose the Right Size for Your Wrist

The Number One Reason People Don't Buy a Watch Online.

It's not the price. It's not the brand. It's the size. "Will it look right on my wrist?" That question stops more watch purchases than any other. This guide answers it completely.

Watch Size: The Three Numbers That Matter

Case Diameter

  • 36mm and under: Classic and dress sizing. Reads as refined rather than small.
  • 38mm–41mm: The versatile range. Works on most wrists. Sweet spot for daily wear.
  • 42mm–44mm: The modern standard for men's watches. Commanding presence.
  • 45mm+: Statement sizing. Best for men with larger builds and wrists.

Case Thickness (Lug-to-Lug)

The lug-to-lug measurement is the distance between the ends of the lugs where the strap or bracelet attaches. As a guide: your lug-to-lug should be no more than your wrist width minus 8–10mm on each side.

Case Height (Thickness)

The depth of the case from back to crystal. Thicker watches are more casual. Thinner watches slide under cuffs more easily. Most daily wear watches sit between 8mm and 12mm in thickness.

How to Measure Your Wrist

Wrap a fabric tape or strip of paper around your wrist just below the wrist bone. Note the measurement in millimetres.

  • Under 150mm circumference: Small wrist. 36–40mm case diameter recommended.
  • 150–175mm circumference: Medium wrist. 40–44mm case diameter works well.
  • 175mm+: Larger wrist. 42–46mm sits proportionately.

The Square Watch Question

A 40mm square case reads larger on the wrist than a 40mm round case because the flat edges fill more visual space. If you normally wear 42mm round, a 38–40mm square will feel comparable. Tomell's 365 square collection sits in the 38–42mm range.

Strap vs Bracelet: How It Changes the Fit

A metal bracelet adds visual width. A leather or rubber strap creates a visual break between case and band. On a smaller wrist, a leather strap often looks better than a full metal bracelet because it keeps visual weight at the case.

Women's Watch Sizing

Women's watches typically sit between 28mm and 38mm. The trend in 2026 has moved toward slightly larger women's watches — 36mm to 38mm reads as modern. Tomell's 14 Moments collection sits at 36mm.
